Silver Hill began this blog to share our expertise and begin a dialogue with the public about mental illness. It is our hope that this will help to demystify and destigmatize a disease that has been shrouded in misperceptions, confusion and often incorrect information. We cover a range of topics, from suicide to addiction to gardening, and the importance of nutrition in caring for the brain.

We hope you will submit questions and comments so we can further explain an illness that affects one in four Americans. If there are any other topics you would like covered, please send them along too.

We hope you will find this helpful, and look forward to hearing from you.

National Recovery Month
Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors National Recovery Month. The goal is to promote and reinforce the message that behavior health is  essential to overall health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.

Suicide Prevention: What You Need to Know to Save a Life
Every forty seconds, someone in the world takes their own life. Approximately 105 Americans die by suicide every day. Suicide is a topic nobody wants to talk about; it seems scary and sad. Although it isn’t a pleasant subject, it’s important to know the warning signs. As we observe National Suicide Prevention Week, we encourage you to educate yourself so you are prepared to help a person in need.

Chronic Pain Awareness Month
Did you know chronic pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined? In 2011, at least 100 million adults in the U.S. had chronic pain conditions. This figure doesn’t include acute pain or children. The most common type of pain is low back pain, followed by headaches and migraines, neck pain and facial pain.
