Silver Hill Hospital Blog

Silver Hill began this blog to share our expertise and begin a dialogue with the public about mental illness. It is our hope that this will help to demystify and destigmatize a disease that has been shrouded in misperceptions, confusion and often incorrect information. We cover a range of topics, from suicide to addiction to gardening, and the importance of nutrition in caring for the brain.

We hope you will submit questions and comments so we can further explain an illness that affects one in four Americans. If there are any other topics you would like covered, please send them along too.

We hope you will find this helpful, and look forward to hearing from you.

How to know when to seek help for teens
Every parent of a teenager is familiar with the mood swings, defiance and other behaviors that are often part of adolescent development. When you have the flu, you most likely take time off from work and give your body the rest it needs to recover. When you are struggling with depression, anxiety or another mental illness and you are having a tough time, do you care for yourself in the same way?

Understanding Self-Harming Behavior
Self-harm or self-injury is when a person intentionally and repeatedly harms themselves. Cutting is the most common, but other methods include scratching, punching, picking skin, pulling hair or burning. It is estimated that about two million Americans injure themselves intentionally.

Snack Foods That Will Improve Your Mood

Pair a carb with a protein for a lasting energy boost.
Now, you may be surprised that Silver Hill is writing what appears to be more of a culinary post than a medical one, but the truth is, what our patients eat is incredibly important to us.
