Adult Inpatient – Psychiatric Disorders
Inpatient care for adult psychiatric disorders is provided in one of two locations: the Acute Care Unit and the General Psychiatric Unit.
The Acute Care Unit is the newest, most hospital-like unit on the Silver Hill campus. It is a modern, spacious 18-bed building with large sun-filled rooms and an outdoor screened patio. The experienced psychiatric, nursing and social work staff on this unit is trained to stabilize patients and provide symptom reduction in a safe, structured environment.
Patients admitted to the Acute Care Unit typically have more severe presentations of a psychiatric disorder, with more need of intensive supervision. These presentations might include psychotic symptoms such as delusions or hallucinations; thoughts of self harm; or the need for medical monitoring because of co-existing medical problems, physical disability or the infirmity of age. The Acute Care Unit is also the site of our Electroshock Treatment Program (ECT).
The General Psychiatric Unit is located in the Patricia Regnemer Main House . It is for patients who have been diagnosed with a psychiatric illness or dual disorder.
Patients admitted to this unit typically have mood disorders, including bipolar disorders, some forms of psychotic disorders, eating disorders, severe forms of personality disorders, such as borderline personality disorders, and others. Part of the unit is open and patients hospitalized here may require less intensive supervision than those admitted to the Acute Care Unit.
In both units treatment is provided by a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, social workers and nursing staff. After admission, each patient meets his or her team, including his/her psychiatrist, at morning rounds. There they will discuss the patient’s goals for treatment and begin to formulate a treatment plan and discharge plan. After that, and with the patient’s permission, the patient’s psychiatrist will call the referring clinician regarding the admission and the social worker will call the patient’s family to arrange a family meeting. |
