Giving to Silver Hill

Ways of Giving to Silver Hill Hospital
Your gift to Silver Hill enhances patient care, upgrades facilities to levels that support the treatment plan of each patient, and creates an environment that supports healing and wellness.

A variety of charitable giving opportunities are available to former patients (alumni), friends and families who want to help by contributing to Silver Hill. Gifts of any size - large and small - are gratefully accepted and individually acknowledged.

Annual Giving Program
The Annual Fund is a most accessible and effective way to support Silver Hill’s mission. Your support of Silver Hill’s Annual Fund, along with other generous friends, can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by psychiatric illness or substance use disorders. Giving to the annual fund at Silver Hill provides for the most urgent needs of the hospital and its patients.

Gifts to the 2007 Annual Fund will be directed to one of Silver Hill’s highest priorities – the purchase and installation of a campus-wide electronic clinical information system. The first component – an electronic medical chart – is already in place. To complete the project it is necessary to fund the remaining components – laboratory, pharmacy, doctors’ orders, and the hardware and software to integrate the entire system.

We invite you to make a gift in support of this critical initiative which will make a lasting difference for patients and staff.  The care of all patients will be greatly enhanced, as there will be greater facility and accuracy in managing clinical information and our caregivers will be able to devote more time directly to our patients and less to clerical tasks. Please use this link to view the 2007 annual appeal letter, which describes the scope of this project in greater detail.

Capital Giving
Endowment
A strong endowment fund provides security for future funding needs and ensures that Silver Hill’s treatment services will remain accessible for years to come. Gifts made to the endowment fund are used for the long-term support of programs offered by Silver Hill.

Among other things, endowment is critical to help fund:
  • innovative new therapies
  • scholarship assistance for people in need without insurance coverage
  • the latest information technology which improves our ability to deliver patient care
  • clinical research projects to foster promising new approaches to recovery and healing
  • outreach education for medical professionals and the public to promote better understanding of the causes and cures for mental health.

  • Campus Renovations and Refurbishments
Recognizing that the ongoing success of our treatment programs and support services depends on the condition and effectiveness of our facilities, Silver Hill has embarked on a systematic Master Plan to improve the physical plant of the Hospital. These wonderful and necessary improvements will ensure that the ambiance which generations of patients have found integral to their care stays pleasing to the eyes and the soul.

  • Patient Care Buildings
  • The vast scope of silver Hill’s services and treatment protocols requires that our facilities are readily adapted to differing needs to enable the use of the latest advances in psychiatric medicine.  To assure patients that silver Hill Hospital can be responsive to their needs, the Hospital leadership is focused on meeting every standard for accreditation – and beyond.

The first residential renovation project – The Lodge – was completed in July of 2006 and is evidence of the thoughtful design and quality construction Silver Hill intends to implement in every building on campus.

In June of 2007, Silver Hill began a total renovation of Main House, the centerpiece of our campus.  It was in Main House, an existing hillside farmhouse, that founder Dr. John Millet opened Silver Hill in 1931.  Importantly, the new Main House will retain many of the wonderful historical features original to the house while incorporating all the essential elements necessary to create a state-of-the-art care environment for the treatment of mental illness.  Silver Hill will reopen Main House in summer, 2008.

Over the next year, Silver Hill will continue to address renovations and enhancements in virtually every building on campus.  To date, improvements have begun in Barrett, River and Scavetta Houses, and enhancements to the interior of ACU are underway. The next major building project will occur at Klingenstein House and plans will be forthcoming in 2008.

  • The Landscape
  • Our magnificent, and private, 45-acre setting is the quintessential location for a psychiatric hospital. Realizing the importance of our natural environment to the care of our patients, we have launched a significant landscaping initiative to ensure that we utilize our acreage in the most optimal way for patients, visitors, and friends.   Plans include a redesign of campus roadways to improve traffic flow and to minimize the intrusion of vehicles on the patient experience; enhancements to the surrounding meadows and woods; the addition of walkways, gardens, and terraces; and the installation of new lighting to make our campus and its buildings safer and more inviting.

    Planned Giving
    Bequests
This is the easiest and most frequently used method of deferred giving. You can either add a provision in your existing will by writing a codicil or you can include Silver Hill in your will as you draw it up. Contact the Development Office for specific bequest language. Remembering Silver Hill in your will can be an important means of helping the hospital sustain its mission of service to those affected by psychiatric illness or substance use disorders.

Life Insurance Policy, 401(k) or IRA
You can name Silver Hill as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy, 401(k), or IRA. As another option, you may choose to donate a paid-up life insurance policy to Silver Hill. Nearly the full cash value of the policy will be tax deductible.

    Recognition Opportunities
Realizing the importance of philanthropy to the future of Silver Hill Hospital, we are able to offer an array of attractive naming opportunities to donors interested in providing significant resources for capital needs.  For more information, please contact Missy Fallon, Director of Development, at (203) 801-2295, or by E-Mail.

    Matching Gifts
Your gift to Silver Hill will be enhanced if your employer provides a matching gift program. Many corporations have established a program of matching contributions made by their employees to charitable organizations. For more information, please check with your personnel office or call the Silver Hill Hospital Development Office (203) 801-2295.

    Memorial/Tribute Gifts
Memorial/tribute gifts are a wonderful way to celebrate someone’s recovery, sobriety or a special occasion, to thank a friend or relative for their support, to honor a special person in your life, or to remember the life of a loved one. Notification of your commemorative gift to Silver Hill (without mention of gift amount) is sent to the honored relative or friend or to the family of the deceased.
