At Silver Hill Hospital we recognize how mental illness and/or addictive behavior of one family member can impact the entire family. That's why we strongly encourage family involvement, with the approval of the patient. This is critical to each patient's progress. The family learns to support the patient's recovery and at the same time preserve the stability and integrity of their own lives.
Family involvement includes:
- Attending a weekly Family Forum – patients and their families participate in the Family Forum that is appropriate to the patient's diagnosis.
- Individual meetings with the patient's treatment care coordinator (social worker), and psychiatrist to discuss diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Careful discharge planning to ensure that patients and their families have as many tools as possible to be successful in the post hospital period and beyond. The treatment team works closely with families and the patient's community therapist to develop a collaborative plan and help identify community resources that will continue to support the recovery process.
Our family program plays a special role in the treatment of adolescents. Families want to help and the adolescent patient is strongly tied to his/her family. Family participation typically includes parents and may, if appropriate, include siblings or others.
