Silver Hill Hospital Blog

Silver Hill began this blog to share our expertise and begin a dialogue with the public about mental illness. It is our hope that this will help to demystify and destigmatize a disease that has been shrouded in misperceptions, confusion and often incorrect information. We cover a range of topics, from suicide to addiction to gardening, and the importance of nutrition in caring for the brain.

We hope you will submit questions and comments so we can further explain an illness that affects one in four Americans. If there are any other topics you would like covered, please send them along too.

We hope you will find this helpful, and look forward to hearing from you.

An Overview of Chronic Pain
An estimated 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, which can last for years and may even last a lifetime, depending on the cause. People experience changes in their nervous system, which actually make them more sensitive to pain. Over time, they begin to lose hope of ever feeling well again and it evolves into Chronic Pain Syndrome, a condition that is comprised of physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms. Pain is no longer just pain; it’s suffering both physically and mentally.

Chronic Pain Awareness Month
Did you know chronic pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined? In 2011, at least 100 million adults in the U.S. had chronic pain conditions. This figure doesn’t include acute pain or children. The most common type of pain is low back pain, followed by headaches and migraines, neck pain and facial pain.

Prescription Drug Safety
When you think about safety, you probably think about wearing seatbelts in cars, not drinking and driving or keeping a fence around your pool, but one of the biggest dangers is hiding in medicine cabinets across the country – prescription opioid painkillers.

A Meditation Approach to Headache Relief
While there are numerous medications available for the various types of headaches, tension or stress-related headaches often respond well to meditation, including guided imagery. At the Chronic Pain and Recovery Center (CPRC) at Silver Hill Hospital, we utilize meditation for headaches to target reductions in frequency, duration, and intensity.
