Silver Hill Hospital Blog

Silver Hill began this blog to share our expertise and begin a dialogue with the public about mental illness. It is our hope that this will help to demystify and destigmatize a disease that has been shrouded in misperceptions, confusion and often incorrect information. We cover a range of topics, from suicide to addiction to gardening, and the importance of nutrition in caring for the brain.

We hope you will submit questions and comments so we can further explain an illness that affects one in four Americans. If there are any other topics you would like covered, please send them along too.

We hope you will find this helpful, and look forward to hearing from you.

Anxiety and Eating Disorders
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the United States; they affect 40 million adults and one in eight children in any given year. They also commonly co-occur with eating disorders.

An Overview of Chronic Pain
An estimated 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, which can last for years and may even last a lifetime, depending on the cause. People experience changes in their nervous system, which actually make them more sensitive to pain. Over time, they begin to lose hope of ever feeling well again and it evolves into Chronic Pain Syndrome, a condition that is comprised of physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms. Pain is no longer just pain; it’s suffering both physically and mentally.

Parenting While Coping with an Anxiety Disorder
When you’re a parent you’re bound to feel anxious at times. It’s normal to feel some anxiety when sending your child to school for the first time, leaving them overnight for the first time or sending them off to summer camp. All parents feel a certain amount of anxiety, but when you have an anxiety disorder, it’s easy for it to spiral out of control.

Meditation is a practice that can be used for many things. It is commonly used to help reduce stress and aid in relaxation, but did you know it can be used in conjunction with other therapies to treat fear?

Social Media and Mental Health
1 in 4 people use social media worldwide. Most people login to social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, multiple times a day. For some, it’s the first thing they see when they open their eyes in the morning and the last thing they see before bed. Although it seems harmless to scroll through your Facebook newsfeed to see what’s going on with your friends, it does come at a price.
