Silver Hill Hospital Blog

Silver Hill began this blog to share our expertise and begin a dialogue with the public about mental illness. It is our hope that this will help to demystify and destigmatize a disease that has been shrouded in misperceptions, confusion and often incorrect information. We cover a range of topics, from suicide to addiction to gardening, and the importance of nutrition in caring for the brain.

We hope you will submit questions and comments so we can further explain an illness that affects one in four Americans. If there are any other topics you would like covered, please send them along too.

We hope you will find this helpful, and look forward to hearing from you.

A Safe Landing for Helicopter Parents
Every parent wants what’s best for their children. We want them to do well in school, make friends, be happy and healthy, and be kind to others. But how much responsibility do we bear as parents in helping them achieve these goals?

This Summer, Explore the Upside of Down Time
Traditionally, summer was a time for kids and their parents to relax and enjoy some unstructured days – a chance to decompress, have fun and play. But thanks to the ubiquity of personal technology, as well as the increasing number of scheduled summer activities, the summer can feel an awful lot like the hectic, plugged-in school year for some families.

5 Tips for Speaking to Children and Teens about Mental Illness

Mental illness is not uncommon. One in four people will struggle with a diagnosable mental illness every year. That means that it will most likely affect you, someone you know and love, or even your kids. But unlike other illnesses, there is still a stigma attached to mental illness and behavioral problems. When it comes to kids, many will begin to develop a stereotypical image of mental illness as they get older based on what they see in the media or hear from friends, which is why education is important. So the question arises - when and how can we talk to our kids about mental illness in a way that will be educational and reassuring?
