Silver Hill Hospital Blog

Silver Hill began this blog to share our expertise and begin a dialogue with the public about mental illness. It is our hope that this will help to demystify and destigmatize a disease that has been shrouded in misperceptions, confusion and often incorrect information. We cover a range of topics, from suicide to addiction to gardening, and the importance of nutrition in caring for the brain.

We hope you will submit questions and comments so we can further explain an illness that affects one in four Americans. If there are any other topics you would like covered, please send them along too.

We hope you will find this helpful, and look forward to hearing from you.

Depression & Older Adults
If you are responsible for caring for an aging parent or older relative, you may grow accustomed to their occasional grumpiness or glass half-full attitude, but don’t be so quick to chalk it up to the typical aging process.

Help Facing Mental Illness is Found in Support Groups
Support groups are an important resource that patients and families can tap to help understand and recover from mental illness. In fact, the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), has identified them as one of the Ten Fundamental Components of Recovery.

Silver Hill Hospital Librarian Can Help You Understand Mental Illness

We know facing a mental illness can be frightening. Many myths and inaccuracies prevail. It involves the brain and is complex. Therefore, having the right information is essential to understanding the diagnosis you or a loved one may have been given. And while reading a book or article is not a substitute for medical care, we do believe that a better grasp of the illness will help you work with your clinician to develop an effective treatment plan.
