Silver Hill Hospital Blog

Silver Hill began this blog to share our expertise and begin a dialogue with the public about mental illness. It is our hope that this will help to demystify and destigmatize a disease that has been shrouded in misperceptions, confusion and often incorrect information. We cover a range of topics, from suicide to addiction to gardening, and the importance of nutrition in caring for the brain.

We hope you will submit questions and comments so we can further explain an illness that affects one in four Americans. If there are any other topics you would like covered, please send them along too.

We hope you will find this helpful, and look forward to hearing from you.

Preparing our kids to confront the challenges of bullying.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and with good reason. Being bullied is linked to many mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, substance abuse and even suicide. Cardinal signs of school bullying include school avoidance, academic difficulties, changes in sleep patterns and health problems. The impact can last a lifetime.

Preparing Teens for College - Tips for Parents
Summer vacation is just beginning, but before you know it, it will be time for many teens to start a whole new chapter in their lives and leave home to begin their freshman year of college. A certain amount of stress and anxiety is bound to come with the transition to independence no matter how excited a kid is to leave the nest.

Alcohol Awareness Month 2015 - The Importance of Early Education
Taking a sip of alcohol before the age of 21 seems pretty harmless to most teens, but the truth is drinking has damaging effects when abused. It’s important to educate kids at a young age about the risks associated with alcohol, which is why "For the Health of It: Early Education on Alcoholism and Addiction" is the theme of this year’s National Alcohol Awareness Month

Developing a Positive Body Image in Children
Sometimes we parents forgot how important our words, thoughts, and feelings are in the lives of our kids.  “We make the weather in our homes” a wiser than me parent once told me.  I think it’s true – especially when it comes to eating behaviors and body image.  As parents, we must be mindful of our own relationship with our bodies, how we eat, and the potential impact on our kids.

ADHD in Children
It is estimated that 6.4 million American children between the ages of 4 – 17 have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), making it one of the most common childhood psychiatric disorders. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that typically begins in childhood, usually between ages 3 – 6 and can continue into adulthood.
