Intensive Outpatient Programs

Treatment Approach
The skills you need to regulate your emotions and live your life

We provide an intensive outpatient programs for patients at a low risk for self-harm who have a stable living environment. Patients live at home and come to Silver Hill two or three days a week for skills training based on the five core modules of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) led by licensed clinicians.

What we treat

DBT was originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder who were chronically suicidal. But research has shown it is also effective in the treatment of other mental health problems, such as anxiety, substance use and behaviors that threaten individual safety, relationships or emotional well-being.

The disorders we treat at the Center include:

Borderline Personality Disorder
A condition with a variety of symptoms that can include instability in mood, self-image and personal relationships, and often self-harming behaviors.
The intentional and repeated physical harm of oneself.
Anxiety disorders
The persistent, excessive and unrealistic worry about everyday things.
Persistent feelings of pervasive sadness, hopelessness and helplessness that interfere with thinking and daily activities.
Substance use disorders
The compulsive or difficult-to-control use of drugs or alcohol despite negative or harmful consequences.
How we treat

DBT is based on five core modules. All five are integral to treatment in the Personality Disorders Center.

Mindfulness, the foundation of DBT, teaches people to observe thoughts and feelings in the moment and realize there’s a choice in how to respond.

Emotion Regulation is learning to more effectively control one’s emotions and become less reactive to people and situations.

Interpersonal Effectiveness teaches how to maintain relationships, while meeting personal needs and preserving self-respect.

Distress Tolerance is an “acceptance strategy” for tolerating intense emotions without engaging in problematic behaviors.

Middle Path is a skill for effectively managing extreme behavior to achieve greater balance in life.
