Mark D’Agostino, M.D., MS, MSc
“What is so unique about Silver Hill is that it has the milieu, the culture, and the skill sets to practice psychiatry the way it should be practiced.”
Treating the whole person, not just the condition, is psychiatry as it ought to be practiced, says Dr. Mark L. D’Agostino. His dual role at Silver Hill encompasses both one-on-one patient care and leadership in support of the hospital’s culture, mission, vision and values.
“It’s our responsibility to look beyond the individual symptoms to outcomes ,” Dr. D’Agostino says, “outcomes not just as we’re defining them with a scale or a measure but outcomes as the patient describes them.”
This simple treatment philosophy has exponential benefits, Dr. D’Agostino says. “When you treat one individual you really are having an impact on an entire family and on an entire network. If you can improve the quality of people’s lives, get them back into the lives they deserve, then that has an impact on their work, on their friendships, on their relationships, on their families, on everything.”
Dr. D’Agostino considers it an honor and a privilege to help people heal. “When you work with patients through crises,” he says, “and you are also there with them on the other side, and they go from hopeless to hopeful as they’re getting back to their lives, that is the most satisfying thing about this work for me.”
