Michelle Tendy, MSW
“We’re asking families to trust their loved ones to us, and if I were in the same situation I know my loved ones would be in safe hands at Silver Hill.”
Earning family trust is the work of Michelle Tendy, MSW, as a social worker in the acute care unit of Silver Hill Hospital. There the mission is to quickly stabilize those suffering a mental health crisis and then put them on the path for continued growth.
“I do a lot of outreach to patients’ families,” says Michelle, “to make sure they are kept updated on how their loved ones are doing, and I think it is one of the most important things I do.”
Michelle says families need to be kept in the loop about diagnosis, medication and treatment…but that sometimes they need more. “Sometimes they just need an ear to relieve their stress, and that’s what I can provide, too.”
Besides family outreach, Michelle meets with patients, runs psychoeducational groups , and sets patients up with resources in the community for when they are ready for discharge. “We show patients and their families that it is possible to improve in the short term and then maintain the gains they’ve made while in the inpatient unit by putting them in touch with resources where a lot of the ongoing work gets done.”
