Silver Hill Hospital Blog

Silver Hill began this blog to share our expertise and begin a dialogue with the public about mental illness. It is our hope that this will help to demystify and destigmatize a disease that has been shrouded in misperceptions, confusion and often incorrect information. We cover a range of topics, from suicide to addiction to gardening, and the importance of nutrition in caring for the brain.

We hope you will submit questions and comments so we can further explain an illness that affects one in four Americans. If there are any other topics you would like covered, please send them along too.

We hope you will find this helpful, and look forward to hearing from you.

Sending Your Child to College While in Recovery from an Eating Disorder
Most college students are excited to start a new year on campus with friends, while parents try not to shed tears as they watch their babies turn into adults before their eyes. Although college is portrayed in the movies as non-stop fun and excitement, that is not the case for everyone; especially for the 25% of U.S. college students who struggle with eating disorders.

This Summer, Explore the Upside of Down Time
Traditionally, summer was a time for kids and their parents to relax and enjoy some unstructured days – a chance to decompress, have fun and play. But thanks to the ubiquity of personal technology, as well as the increasing number of scheduled summer activities, the summer can feel an awful lot like the hectic, plugged-in school year for some families.

Be Your Own Mental Health Advocate
When you are dealing with a mental illness, or any condition for that matter, it's extremely important to become an advocate for yourself and make sure you have a voice in your treatment plan. Most likely your treatment team will consist of a psychiatrist, a psychologist and/or a social worker. These professionals know the intricate details of mental illnesses, how they typically present and what is the best first step in treatment.

Parenting While Coping with an Anxiety Disorder
When you’re a parent you’re bound to feel anxious at times. It’s normal to feel some anxiety when sending your child to school for the first time, leaving them overnight for the first time or sending them off to summer camp. All parents feel a certain amount of anxiety, but when you have an anxiety disorder, it’s easy for it to spiral out of control.
