How We Treat

An Environment of Excellence

Psychiatric and substance abuse disorders present themselves in unique and complex ways. Your experience of a condition may be very different from that of someone else with the same diagnosis. You can also discover that the initial condition that caused you to seek treatment is complicated by the presence of another one.

The Highest Credentials
Silver Hill has the skill, compassion and commitment to successfully treat your illness. We are a full-service psychiatric hospital with a legacy of excellence since 1931. Our treatment teams are led by 15 board-certified psychiatrists who are recognized experts in their fields. They have knowledge and insight to uncover the true nature of your illness, including co-occurring disorders, and to create an effective treatment plan that meets your specific needs.

The power of Silver Hill to heal is centered on its team approach to treatment. You will receive 360-degree care from doctors, nurses, social workers, technicians and other clinicians and staff, who come together regularly to share their insights and reach consensus on the best treatment for you.

Proven Therapies
We offer evidence-based treatments individualized to your needs and known to produce positive results. Two outstanding examples of these are Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). And we have the skill and training to choose among all of our therapeutic tools to find the ones that work best for you. In addition, we provide Alternative and Complementary Therapies to reinforce and support your treatment program.

Seamless Care
Silver Hill provides you with three seamless levels of care all on one campus – in one of the most beautiful settings of all behavioral health facilities in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and beyond. These care levels include Inpatient for stabilization; Transitional Living for continued therapeutic recovery; and Intensive Outpatient care for ongoing support.

Our Therapeutic Approach
Below is a comprehensive look at the therapies, treatments and structured levels of care we offer you.

Co-Occurring Disorders

Many patients who initiate treatment for either a psychiatric disorder or substance use disorder suffer from an additional diagnosable condition at the same time. At Silver Hill, we have extensive experience and expertise in treating these dual conditions simultaneously. Learn More About Co-Occurring Conditions

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a highly-structured form of behavioral therapy that provides you with the skills necessary to regulate emotions, control destructive behaviors and improve interpersonal relations. Learn More About DBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a short-term form of psychotherapy that is a practical approach to problem solving. CBT helps you change problematic thought patterns that have hindered you in the past. Learn More About CBT

Additional Therapeutic Approaches

Besides Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, our highly trained clinicians can select from a broad range of other evidence-based therapeutic approaches in order to find the right fit for your needs. Learn More About Additional Therapeutic Approaches

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

To address the needs of individuals who have experienced lasting impact from traumatic events and struggle to recover from symptoms of post-traumatic stress, Silver Hill Hospital offers intensive trauma therapy. Through the expert guidance of clinicians trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidence-based PTSD treatment, individuals within the Silver Hill Transitional Living Program have the option of pursuing CPT with a referral from their treatment team.

Patients referred for CPT are educated about the treatment, how it works, and are assessed for readiness by the manager of the program. If ready and appropriate, patients are assigned a CPT therapist. Patients will then work with their additional assigned therapist to identify “stuck points.” Stuck points are places where recovery from trauma is impeded, and often includes self-blame. The other areas of focus include safety, trust, power & control, esteem, and intimacy and how they have been impacted by their trauma history. CPT can be completed in 12 sessions. This makes it possible to complete a course of treatment during a regular TLP stay by engaging in multiple therapy appointments per week.

Alternative and Complementary Therapies

Our alternative and complementary therapies work in conjunction with psychotherapy and medication management in your treatment plan. These proven therapies alleviate your symptoms and reinforce skills when used in conjunction with traditional approaches. Learn More About Alternative and Complementary Therapies

Levels of Care

From Inpatient to Transitional Living to Intensive Outpatient programs, Silver Hill provides access to the treatment you need, when you need it, all in one location. This means there is no disruption of treatment or dislocation of care.

Inpatient – Inpatient care provides stabilization, symptom reduction, medication management, and detoxification when indicated. It prepares you for subsequent levels of care – and we begin planning for those as soon as you are admitted.

Transitional Living – After your symptoms have stabilized, the next stage of care will be extended treatment in one of our transitional living programs, where you continue treatment while living on-campus.

Intensive Outpatient – Intensive outpatient programs are for patients who live at home and are able to come to Silver Hill several days a week for treatment and skills building.
